Michael D. Wellington, a cherished partner, father, grandfather, great-grandfather,
brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2024, in Downers Grove,
Illinois. Born on July 13, 1948, in Akron, Ohio, to the late Wilbur and Margaret
Wellington, Michael's journey through life was marked by his unwavering spirit and the
love he shared with those around him.
Michael's early years were spent in Akron until his family moved to Boulder Hill, where
he attended Oswego High School. After graduation, he proudly served his country in the
United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict. His dedication to service was a
testament to his character, and it was a theme that resonated throughout his life.
Upon returning from military service, Michael found his calling as an automotive
mechanic, a career that he pursued with passion and excellence. His hands were rarely
clean, but his heart was always full as he worked tirelessly to provide for his family.
Michael's love for speed and precision was evident not only in his work but also in his
hobbies. He was a familiar face at the Oswego Drag Strip, where he reveled in the thrill
of drag racing. His competitive spirit also shone through in his involvement with
competitive archery. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, often taking long road trips with
Sherry at his side.
Michael was a beloved member of the Montgomery V.F.W. Post 7452, where he found
camaraderie and community. His commitment to his fellow service members was a
source of pride and fulfillment, and he cherished the bonds formed with his brothers and
sisters in arms.
Those who knew Michael best will remember him as a man who was incredibly handy,
loving, and selfless. He was the rock of his family, a source of strength and support that
never wavered. Michael was the beloved partner of Sherry for 20 beautiful years, and
together they built a life filled with love and mutual respect.
A dedicated father, Michael leaves behind a legacy of love and guidance in his children:
Chris (Christine) Wellington, Brent Wellington, Cory (Jamie) Wellington, Heather
(James) Hicks, and Scott Wellington. He instilled in them the values of hard work,
integrity, and compassion, which they carry forward.
As a grandfather, Michael's joy was multiplied. He took immense pride in his
grandchildren: Jordan (Priscilla) Wellington, Crystal (Fiancé Payton) Wellington, Hailey
Sanders, Kendall Hicks, Nora Wellington, and Remy Wellington. Each of them held a
special place in his heart, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
The circle of life continued to expand as Michael welcomed his great-grandchildren:
Emma, Mia, Ryker, and Elizabeth. His eyes would light up with each visit, each hug,
each new milestone they reached.
Michael also leaves behind his siblings, Linda (Steve) Browning and Steve (Shelley)
Wellington, who will miss his guidance and ever-present support. The bond they shared
was unbreakable, and his memory will live on through the stories they tell and the
memories they cherish.
There are no immediate services planned, a celebration of life is being planned for the
Summer of 2025 and details will be shared when finalized.
