Michael R. Firmand, affectionately known as Mike to his friends and Papa to his family,
passed away peacefully on September 6, 2024, in Oswego, Illinois. Born on July 14,
1950, in Peoria, Illinois, Mike's life was marked by dedication to his family, a passion for
his work, and a love for the simple pleasures in life.
Mike's journey began in the warm, tight-knit community of Peoria Heights, Illinois. He
met the love of his life, Nita (nee Jacobs), and they were married on June 5, 1971, at St.
Thomas Catholic Church in Peoria Heights. In 1973, Mike and Nita moved to Aurora for
Mike’s new job at Caterpillar. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter, a
bond that has lasted for 53 years.
Their love was further enriched by the arrival of their daughters Beth and Amy. Mike's
family was the cornerstone of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them,
especially with the arrival of his grandchildren Jack, Nathan, Tessa, and Charlie. There
was nothing he loved more than watching his grandchildren’s baseball games, soccer
games, wrestling matches, dance recitals, plays, and band performances. He was
lovingly known as Papa (and sometimes Batman) to his grandchildren, who he
cherished with all his heart.
Mike was an alumnus of Richwoods Community High School and went on to earn his
Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering from Bradley University in 1972, followed by a
Masters in Industrial Management from Northern Illinois University in 1991. His
educational background laid the foundation for a remarkable career.
In 2011, Mike retired from Caterpillar after 38 years of dedicated service. His
contributions were significant, including designing and supervising the construction of
the Caterpillar Aurora warehouse building and assembly lines. He was particularly
proud of his role in building the 994 Wheel Loader, a colossal earthmoving machine that
stands as a testament to his engineering expertise. His commitment to excellence was
further demonstrated by his achievement as a Six Sigma Master Black Belt.
Outside of work, Mike was known for his love of golf and fishing, hobbies that provided
him with relaxation and an opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends. But
perhaps Mike's most endearing quality was his sense of humor. He loved telling dad
jokes, a trait that brought smiles and eye rolls in equal measure to those around him.
Those who knew Mike would describe him as loving, generous, and selfless. His
presence was a source of stability and warmth, and his actions often spoke louder than
his words. He was a man who put others before himself and made a lasting impact on
the lives of many.
Mike is survived by his devoted wife, Anita; daughters, Beth (Patrick) Kremer and Amy
(Brian) Craft; grandchildren Jack and Charlie Kremer and Nathan and Tessa Craft;
Parents Al and Angie Firmand; his brother, Matt; sisters, Donita (Dave) Fox and Dianna
(Helmut) Schuenemann; sister-in-law, Kathy Firmand; sister-in-law, Donna Winkler; and
a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Mark Firmand
and brother-in-law Ed Winkler.
Mike's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with the threads of love, hard work, and joy.
As we bid farewell to a man of such character and kindness, we cherish the memories
and the legacy he leaves behind. His spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those
who loved him and were touched by his generosity. Mike Firmand's story is one of a life
well-lived, and he will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Mike’s memory to the ACLU.
