Mary Zajac Life Story

Mary A. Zajac, a cherished matriarch and beacon of love and resilience, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2026, in North Aurora, Illinois. Born on April 23, 1948, in Evergreen Park, Illinois, Mary's life was a testament to her enduring strength and capacity for love.

The daughter of the late Edward and Elene Burt, Mary grew up on the south side of Chicago and graduated from Oak Lawn Community High School in 1967. Her formative years in the vibrant community would shape her into the remarkable woman she would become. Mary's heart found its match when she was introduced to Mark Zajac by her sister Rose. The two fell deeply in love and were united in marriage on July 19, 1980, embarking on a journey filled with joy, challenges, and unwavering partnership until Mark's passing.

Mary's legacy is lovingly carried on by her devoted children, Marcia (Jeff) Matson, Michelle (Jesse) Crossen, Merideth (Mike) Scaglione, and Mark (Laura) Zajac. Her role as a grandmother was one of her most treasured, as she showered Delaney, the late Justin, Kierstin, Koltin, James, Connor, Tanner, Tyler, Jailee, Mia, Caleb, Jaxson, and Emmy with affection and wisdom. Mary also delighted in her role as a great-grandmother to Juanita and Luna, whose youthful spirits brought her immeasurable joy.

Throughout her life, Mary's passion for living was evident in the simple pleasures she cherished. She enjoyed gambling, long walks, playing bingo, and immersing herself in a good book. Her talents in the kitchen were legendary, especially her Biscuit Pizza, Pumpkin Pie, and the macaroni salad that became a staple at every family gathering. These recipes and the memories of shared meals will continue to be a source of comfort and celebration for her family.

Mary's battle with dementia and Alzheimer's was a long and arduous one. It was a journey that tested the family's strength, as they watched a once vibrant woman confront the challenges of a disease that slowly eroded her memories and abilities. Yet, even as the illness progressed, Mary's essence never wavered — her love, her strength, and her nurturing spirit remained the bedrock of her identity.

In the end, while hearts are heavy with loss, there is solace in knowing that Mary is now at peace, reunited with her beloved Mark, free from the constraints of her earthly struggles. Her family takes comfort in the belief that her spirit lives on, guiding them with the same love and wisdom that she bestowed in life.
