Passed away together on January 29, 2026

On January 29, 2026, our family suffered an unimaginable and heartbreaking loss when both James P. Fitzmaurice Sr. (born December 16, 1961, age 64, of Bay City, Michigan) and Virgie B. Fitzmaurice (born April 27, 1963, age 62, originally from the Philippines) tragically passed away in a house explosion. The shock of losing them so suddenly has left their Family’s hearts shattered and their lives forever changed.

James proudly served in the United States Navy, carrying with him a deep sense of honor, duty, and commitment throughout his life. He was also a man who found joy and wonder in the worlds of Star Wars and Star Trek. These stories weren’t just entertainment; they sparked excitement, nostalgia, and a youthful glow that never left him. Whether he was quoting beloved characters or debating the lore of galaxies far, far away, his passion brought warmth, humor, and connection to those around him.

Virgie found her peace in the garden. Her hands were always working in the soil, nurturing flowers, plants, and life itself. She created beauty wherever she went, and that same warmth filled their home. Her gentle spirit, caring nature, and quiet strength were felt by all who spent time with her.

And together, they shared their greatest joy: being grandparents. After 41 years of marriage, nothing made them happier than watching their grandchildren grow. Their grandkids were their whole world, and every laugh, every milestone, and every little moment meant everything to them. Their absence leaves a profound emptiness in the hearts of their grandchildren, who will forever miss the love, comfort, and joy their grandparents brought into their lives.

They are survived by:
Children: Jimmy (Nubia) Fitzmaurice Jr., Jackie (Aaron) Dotson
Grandchildren: Leia Fitzmaurice, JP Fitzmaurice, Mickayla Fitzmaurice, Aubrey Dotson
Siblings: Mary Lou (Louis) Wilson, Joseph (Cheryl) Fitzmaurice, Sharron (Daniel) Beebe, Thomas (Michele) Fitzmaurice

In accordance with their wishes, they will be cremated. Our family will be holding a Celebration of Life to honor them, on Saturday, February 21, 2026 4:00-8:00 p.m. to  remember their lives, and come together as  family and friends to share memories together.
 

Though this tragedy has created an unfillable emptiness, the legacy they leave behind — in love, kindness, family, and memories — will remain forever.
