George Edward Olmstead, a cherished family man, long-time church member, and respected computer engineer died surrounded by family and friends on February 17, 2025, in South Bend, Indiana, at the age of 85. He was born on February 2, 1940, in Cicero, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Olmstead Sr., his mother Charlotte (Zavislak) Olmstead, and his siblings, Joan, Robert Jr., Carol, Michael, John, Richard, Patrick, and Kerry. George is survived by his loving children, Sheri (Al) Kroska, Preston (Sarah) Olmstead, Rebecca (Brian) Babcock, Dannielle (Steve) Swihart, and Victoria (Ryan) Peat, as well as his grandchildren, Gabriella (Ian) Ware, Hannah (Brad) Smith, Emma Kroska, Alexis Swihart, Jacob Swihart, Amanda Olmstead, Emily Swihart, Rylie Babcock, Katelynn Olmstead, Colton Peat, John Babcock, and Owen Peat. His legacy continues to blossom through each of them.
He is also survived by his sisters Arline (Tom) and Linda (Jim), his brothers William (Rose), Christopher (Denise), and Dean, as well as his sisters-in-law Megan, Claudia, and Rose. His absence is profoundly felt by his family, with whom he shared a lifetime of memories.
George was proud to have graduated from Morton East High School before earning his associate degree. His career as a computer engineer spanned many years where his sharp intellect served him well.
An avid fisherman, George cherished his time on the water, waiting for the next catch. He had a passion for bowling and could frequently be found at the local alley, engaged in friendly competition. Healthy living was important to him, and he maintained a regimen of jogging, weightlifting, and exercising well into his later years.
George had a zest for life that took him on many travels with his family. When at home, he found enjoyment in his garden, where he tended to trees, flowers, and vegetables with passion. However, it was the laughter and energy of his grandchildren that truly enlivened him; their presence brought him immense joy.
Memorial Visitation will beheld on Monday, April 28, 2025 from 1:30-5:00 p.m. A brief memorial service will take place at 2:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be left in George’s name to Heartland Hospice, 230 W. Catalpa Dr., Unit D, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
