On March 17, 1932, the Angel of the Lord delivered a precious gift to
Wilbert Sr and Frances Sadberry Bowers. They named her Doris June
Bowers. Doris or as she was affectionately known “June” and “Shorty”
grew into a loving, generous young woman who developed a love of
teaching. She served not only as a teacher but as a mentor to her
students. She volunteered her time after school and in the summers to
tutor any student who needed extra help. She received many awards for
her service but through it all she remained a humble person.
She married at an early age and from that union came a son who she
named John Edwin Thomas Jr.
On January 19 th , 1963, she wed Lowell Rodney Turley. She and Lowell
had a blended family that included Robert Henry, Michael Barton, Lora
Louise and Marvis Antionette. They were never stepchildren; they were
her children. She loved spending time with the grandchildren in the
summertime and the grandchildren adored her.
On December 24, 2024, the Lord said, “Well done, my good and faithful
servant” and called her home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbert and Frances Bowers,
son Robert Henry Turley, and aunts and uncles.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Lowell Rodney Turley, sons
John (Susan) Thomas and Michael Barton Sherfield. Daughters, Lora
Louise (Stephen) Washington and Marvis Durr.
Grandchildren: Brandon Joseph Thomas, Adam Bowers Thomas
(Bridget), Garrett Payton (Gina) Turley, Jeelbere Michael Sherfield,
