David R. Watt, a cherished father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2025, in Oswego, Illinois, at the age of 70. Born on November 16, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois, to William Wallace Watt and Ellen Marie (nee Burton) Watt, David's life was marked by dedication to his family, a legendary sense of humor, and an unwavering work ethic.
David grew up in the vibrant city of Chicago and was a proud graduate of Morgan Park High School. His pursuit of higher education led him to UIC Circle, where he not only joined the Tao Alpha Rho Fraternity but also met the love of his life, Barb. Their love story began on campus, and they married on March 20, 1977. Together, they built a life in Bolingbrook, Illinois, filled with love, laughter, and the joyous hustle and bustle of a growing family.
He was a devoted father to Eric (Valerie), Jason (Valerie), and Andrew Watt, and he embraced the role of grandfather with open arms, doting on Sophia, Katy, Madison, Scarlett, Eliana, and Emmalyn Watt. David also held a special place in his heart for his sisters, Marion Hazen, Wilma Leatzow and carried the memory of his late sister, Ellen Watt, with him always.
David's professional life was as diverse as it was dedicated. He served his community as a postal carrier for the USPS, navigating routes in Plainfield and Naperville, and as a 911 dispatcher for Plainfield. He also worked as a courier in Chicago for US Messenger Services. Known for his strong work ethic, David often held two jobs to ensure his family's needs were always met.
Family was the cornerstone of David's world. He was the quintessential family man, who, with a twinkle in his eye, could light up a room with his quick wit and smart quips. His humor was a gift that he shared generously, earning him the affectionate title of "Smartass" among those who knew him best. David cherished the memories of traveling to the family farm in Iowa during his youth, where he learned the value of hard work and the importance of family ties.
An avid sports fan, David relished attending and watching his grandchildren's sporting and dance events. He was proud to be one of the original members of the WBIG Radio Shopping show, where he was always prepared with gift certificates for any spontaneous dining adventure.
In honor of David's love for sports and his relaxed demeanor, the family invites those attending the visitation to wear casual clothes or their favorite sports team apparel, a fitting tribute to a man who lived life with joy and simplicity.
David R. Watt will be remembered as a loving, generous, and selfless man. His legacy is one of unwavering commitment to his family, a life filled with laughter, and a heart that always put others first. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him, and he will be deeply missed.
