Daniel Dunn Life Story

Daniel J. “Dan” Dunn, age 73, passed away on July 7, 2026, in Aurora, Illinois. Born on September 17, 1952, in Maryland, he lived a life marked by devotion to family, a generous spirit, and a wide range of talents that touched everyone who knew him.

After Dan was born in Maryland while his father, Edwynn, was stationed in the Navy, the family returned to Chicago and settled in the Edison Park area. He grew up in a home shaped by strong family ties and a deep sense of responsibility. Dan graduated from Taft High School in Chicago and later attended flight school, beginning the path that would guide much of his professional life. He carried himself with quiet confidence and a steady work ethic, and those who knew him best admired the way he approached life with both skill and humility.

Dan began his career as a pilot with U.P.S. and later flew for America West Airlines before operating private charter planes. Aviation was more than a profession to him. It was a calling that reflected his discipline, his precision, and his love of being in the air. He took pride in his work and in the trust placed in him by those who flew with him and worked alongside him. His career was a testament to his dedication and his ability to meet challenges with calm determination.

Outside of work, Dan was a musician at heart. Growing up, he played guitar and shared his love of music through two Chicago bands, Love Castle and Boulder. Music was one of the many ways he expressed his creativity, and it remained an important part of who he was throughout his life. He also had a deep appreciation for the simple pleasures of home. He kept large aquariums filled with tropical fish and took great pride in caring for them. His green thumb was equally well known, as he always kept several plants and enjoyed nurturing them with patience and care.

He is survived by his mother, Gertrude Dunn; his brother, Stephen Dunn; his sister, Debra Dunn; his daughter, Brittany Marshall; his grandchildren, Amaria Scott, Mariyah Marshall, and Jayceon Marshall; his nephews and niece, Skylar Nova and Brook Brito; and his dear friend, Tom Werkma. He was preceded in death by his father, Edwynn Dunn. Dan cherished his family deeply, and the bonds he shared with them were among the greatest joys of his life.

Dan will be remembered for the many roles he filled with grace and strength, including son, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, friend, pilot, musician, and caretaker of the many things he loved. His life was one of purpose, creativity, and devotion, and his memory will remain a blessing to all who were fortunate enough to know him
