Brian G. Zalenas

Brian G. Zalenas, who lived a life marked by kindness, courage, and selflessness, passed away on August 15, 2026, in Hinsdale, Illinois, at the age of 66.

Born on July 24, 1960, in LaGrange, Illinois, he was the son of the late George and Irmgard Zalenas. He grew up in Western Springs, Illinois, where he developed the strong character, steady work ethic, and quiet determination that guided him throughout his life. He was a proud graduate of Lyons Township High School and went on to earn his Bachelor of Science / Aviation from Purdue University. He continued his education through the United States Air Force Officers Training and later received his MBA from the University of Illinois Chicago, with a focus on finance and marketing.

Brian dedicated much of his life to serving in the United States Air Force, retiring in 1991 as a Captain after meritorious noncombat service. During his military career, he flew the KC-135 Stratotanker, an air-refueling plane, and played a crucial role in staging efforts during Operation Desert Storm. After his active duty, he continued to serve as a Reserve Assistance Officer with the Civil Air Patrol at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, Illinois, from 1994 to 2012. During this time, he served as a top instructor at the National Cadet Officer School, mentoring over 600 cadets for future leadership roles and potential military service. Brian retired in 2012 as a Lieutenant Colonel. His service exemplified the courage and commitment that defined him, and he carried the values of duty and responsibility in all aspects of his life. 
Following his noncombat military retirement, Brian began a distinguished career with American Airlines in 1991. He first flew domestic routes on MD-80, Fokker 100, 727, 757, and 767, sharing his skill and professionalism with countless passengers and colleagues. He later transitioned to international flights on the 777, traveling the world and reaching destinations that included London, Beijing, Buenos Aires, New Delhi, and his favorite city, Rome. He found great satisfaction in aviation and took pride in a career that allowed him to connect with people and places across the globe. He retired in 2025 after 34 years of service. 

Brian was deeply loved by his lifelong companion, Kristine Jurmu, who stood by his side through the years and shared in the many chapters of his life. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Zalenas, his nephew Robert James Zalenas, and niece Megan Zalenas.  He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Irmgard Zalenas, whose memory remained close to him throughout his life.

Outside of work, Brian enjoyed the simple pleasures that brought him joy and energy. He loved water skiing, snowmobiling, and cycling, and he embraced these interests with the same enthusiasm and spirit that he brought to every part of his life. Those who knew him will remember his warm presence, his dependable nature, and the way he made others feel supported and valued.
