Obituary

Jan S. Kuntaras passed away on November 4, 2026, at home in Oswego, Illinois. He was born on August 16, 1956, in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in Cicero. Throughout his life, Jan was known as an athletic man who truly loved sports, bringing that energy and enthusiasm into both his work and the things that gave him joy.

Jan graduated from Morton East High School in 1974. He went on to own and operate Rite Way Brick Restoration, building his livelihood through hard work and dedication. In 1991, he married Rebecca Dummitt in Orland Park, beginning a marriage that became a central part of his life.

Sports remained one of Jan’s great passions. He played softball and later coached girls softball, sharing his love of the game with others. He loved to watch football and baseball on television and was a loyal fan of the Miami Dolphins and the Chicago Cubs. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles, listened to the blues, and played the harmonica. At home, he adored his golden retriever, Charger, whose companionship brought him happiness.

Above all, Jan will be remembered by those who knew and loved him best. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca; his daughter, Anneliese Brooks and her husband, Jim; and his son, John Kuntaras. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Jacob, Joshua, Josh, Jack, Jessica, Alexis, and Marcus, who were an important part of his family circle and his legacy.

He is also survived by his brothers, Stas Kuntaras and his wife, Mary, and Richie Kuntaras and his wife, Rita; his sister, Terry Matthews, widow of the late Skip Matthews; and Irena Stanski and her husband, Paul, along with several nieces and nephews. Each of them carries forward memories of Jan’s spirit, his love of sports and music, and the many ordinary moments that become precious in remembrance.

Jan was preceded in death by his father, Stanislov Kuntaras, and his mother, Zofia Szymel.

Visitation will be held on November 6, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Bauman Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 5600 Route 34, Oswego, Illinois 60543.

Jan’s life was marked by devotion to family, enjoyment of simple pleasures, and a lasting love for the games, music, and people that filled his days. He will be deeply missed and warmly remembered.
